Death Sentence Handed DOWN in Athena Strand Case — Justice Served?

A Tarrant County jury sentenced Tanner Horner to death by lethal injection for the kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand, whom he abducted during a delivery to her Paradise, Texas home in December 2022.

The Crime and Evidence

Horner, a former FedEx driver, pleaded guilty to capital murder just moments before his trial began last month. Prosecutors presented disturbing evidence during the sentencing phase, including Horner’s DNA found on the child’s body. A haunting photograph captured some of Athena’s final moments inside the delivery truck after her abduction. The case proceeded directly to the penalty phase where jurors heard emotional testimony from both of Athena’s parents and viewed graphic evidence of her last moments alive.

Family Impact Statement

Athena’s uncle, Elijah Strand, delivered a powerful statement in court Tuesday that emphasized the devastating loss. He told Horner that Athena had dreams she would never chase, birthdays she would never celebrate, and a life she would never live because of his actions. Strand rejected Horner’s claims of finding God, stating his actions stood in direct opposition to everything he claimed to believe. He told the convicted killer that he would face divine judgment and warned him of God’s wrath.

Defense Arguments Rejected

Defense attorneys called numerous expert witnesses to testify about Horner’s mental health and medical history in an attempt to spare him from execution. His mother and grandmother also testified about his childhood circumstances. The jury rejected these arguments after hearing from both sides. Prosecutors emphasized that Horner’s DNA was found in places where it should never be discovered on a seven-year-old child, underscoring the heinous nature of the crime that destroyed an entire family.

Justice Served

Elijah Strand concluded his statement by telling Horner he represents nothing more than a footnote in Athena’s story. He promised that her name would be forever remembered and celebrated, while everyone would forget the man who took her life. The death sentence brings a measure of justice to a family facing generational pain from the loss of their young daughter, whose innocence was met with violence when she should have been safe in her own home.

  1. We can all pray that the sentence will be carried out very soon. If not, this POS will appeal until he gets released by some idiot judge. We all have seen this too often.
