The Trump administration has committed to investigating reports of approximately 10 American scientists who have vanished or died under mysterious circumstances since mid-2023, many with access to classified nuclear and aerospace materials.
White House Acknowledges Troubling Pattern
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed reporters’ questions during an April 2026 briefing about the alarming pattern of scientists disappearing or dying. Leavitt stated she had not yet spoken to relevant agencies but committed to contacting them immediately. She characterized the situation as “definitely something I think this government and administration would deem worth looking into.” The acknowledgment came after journalists pressed for answers about cases spanning nearly three years, involving researchers from America’s most prestigious scientific institutions.
Scientists With Security Clearances Vanish
The victims include Monica Reza, director of materials processing at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who vanished in June 2025. Steven Garcia, a government contractor at Kansas City National Security Campus, disappeared in August 2025. Anthony Chavez, a staffer at Los Alamos National Laboratory, also went missing. These disappearances share a common thread: each individual had access to classified or sensitive government research. The pattern raises serious questions about whether these cases represent random incidents or a coordinated security threat targeting America’s scientific infrastructure.
Unexplained Deaths Among Elite Researchers
Multiple scientists have died under circumstances that remain unexplained or suspicious. Michael David Hicks died in July 2023 with no autopsy report or recorded cause of death. Frank Maiwald, who worked with Hicks at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, died in July 2024 without a public cause of death. MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, conducting nuclear fusion research, was shot dead at his Boston home in December 2025. Pharmaceutical researcher Jason Thomas was found dead in a Massachusetts lake in March 2026, three months after disappearing. Astrophysicist Carl Grillmair from Jet Propulsion Laboratory was fatally shot during a suspected burglary attempt in California.
National Security Implications Remain Unclear
The concentration of victims at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is particularly striking, with multiple researchers from the same facility among the dead or missing. The facility conducts sensitive aerospace research, including projects related to advanced propulsion and classified programs. Congressional representatives have expressed interest in the cases but reportedly received no substantive briefings from the administration. No formal investigation has been announced, and authorities have not established any official connection between the incidents. The lack of transparency surrounding these cases undermines confidence in the government’s ability to protect scientists working on critical national security projects.

Questions About Government Response
The nearly three-year gap between the first incidents and official White House acknowledgment raises concerns about government responsiveness to potential threats against America’s scientific community. These researchers represent the backbone of national defense and technological advancement. Their work in nuclear fusion, aerospace technology, and classified programs is essential to maintaining America’s competitive edge. The administration’s delayed response suggests a troubling pattern of bureaucratic inertia that characterizes much of what frustrates Americans about their government. Whether working in classified defense programs or cutting-edge civilian research, scientists deserve protection and accountability when their safety is compromised.
The White House has promised to contact relevant agencies to verify the reports and assess security implications. However, no timeline for investigation results has been provided, leaving families of the missing and deceased without answers. The scientific community working with classified material now faces uncertainty about whether adequate security measures exist to protect them. Until the administration provides concrete information about these cases and takes decisive action to prevent future incidents, questions will persist about whether powerful interests are targeting America’s brightest minds and whether our government can effectively respond to such threats.

I would suggest they begin with exhuming the bodies and determining the causes of death. With others going through their lives with a fine-tooth comb, so to speak, from the time they disappeared, continuing until you are back to the time they were still working or were on duty and undergoing reviews.
