Faye the swan, a respected animal icon in Manlius, New York, met a gruesome death on May 29, 2023 after three refugee teens killed and ate the swan.
On the day she disappeared, concerned citizens sent numerous tips to the police, which eventually led to the arrest of 18-year-old Eman Hussan of Syracuse, New York, and two minors of the ages 16 and 17. All three of the refugees are Myanmar nationals and are high schoolers in the area.
Respected Animal Meets a Gruesome Fate
Manlius Police Sergeant Ken Hatter noted that the swan did not fight back when the refugees attacked her because she was nesting. The refugees later took the swan home and proceeded to feast on her.

Faye’s death leaves another swan, Manny, as the only swan at the pond in Manlius. Swans have a well-established history in Manilius that goes back over 100 years.
In response to this grisly incident, nearly 9,000 people have signed a petition calling on authorities to severely punish the three refugees. None of the petitioners bought the argument that the refugees were unaware of the laws in place that protect wildlife like Swans from predatory humans.
Will the Refugees be Brought to Justice For Their Heinous Act?
On top of that, the teen refugees took Faye’s babies away from the nest. However, authorities were able to rescue the baby swans who luckily avoided their mother’s gruesome fate. Two were discovered at a pet store, whereas another two were discovered at a residence where, from the appearance of it, the refugee teens potentially had plans of domesticating the baby swans and raising them as pets in the near future.

During a press conference, Manlius mayor Paul Whorralla vowed that the town would take care of the young swans from here forward. The young refugees were charged with felony grand larceny and criminal mischief and could potentially be deported for their killing of Faye.
