It’s been a while since we last heard from Brittney Griner, the WNBA player who got caught up in a drug bust in Russia, ultimately netting her a nine-year sentence in a women’s prison for possession of cannabis oil.
Immediately after her sentence, some of her comments about the US National Anthem were trending again on Twitter, with many reiterating how she said we shouldn’t be playing it during the WNBA season.
Griner facing nine years in a Russian prison
Probably due to being aware of the backlash she would get for such a “brave” opinion, Griner claimed she meant no disrespect to the country.
Her father is both a Vietnam veteran and a former officer of the law, who’d served for well over three decades.
Should we be trying to get Brittney Griner out of jail? #charlestonwhite

Her efforts were in vain though.
Choosing to protest an integral piece of US patriotism is practically spitting in the face of everything great about this country, especially in a sports league where many others are completely unbothered by it.
Save for a few that sent out supportive messages to now-incarcerated Griner, many were overjoyed the athlete finally got what was a long time coming, joking she won’t have to listen to the US National Anthem for at least nine more years.
Others, however, pointed out the anti-patriot was quick to call on her fellow Americans for help when Russia initially caught her in possession of contraband.
So happy Brittney Griner moved to a place where she doesn’t have to worry about hearing that nasty AMERICAN ANTHEM anymore 😂

One bad apple spoils the whole bunch
Unfortunately, Griner isn’t alone in her beliefs surrounding the National Anthem.
She’s joined by fellow WNBA star Brianna Turner, who also holds a strong opinion against the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Phoenix Mercury’s games.
She went on to claim all the negative comments about Griner were due to an overall lack of compassion and understanding among Americans these days.
It’s almost as if her co-star didn’t literally break another country’s drug laws and get caught red-handed.
It’s crystal clear Brianna has a strong bias towards Griner, be it for the fact they’re friends off the court as well; although it’s often found that friendship doesn’t transcend the law, regardless of what the left may want you to think.
If #BrittneyGriner is sentenced to years in a Russian labor camp, she might come to realize that the system set up by the American founders was not so bad after all. Funny how this kind of a “foreign education” is sometimes necessary for people to appreciate their own country

Before her sentence was given to her, Brittney remained adamant about claiming she never meant to break any laws, despite knowing full well that cannabis and any of its derivatives are illegal in Russia, especially given how she tried to hide it.
Fortunately, the Russian law system still upholds the “facts don’t care about your feelings” agenda.
Therefore, Griner was soon thereafter awarded nine years in a top-of-the-line Russian prison, giving her more than enough time to reconsider her opinions regarding patriotism in US sports leagues.
