AOC Called Spikes in Crime Rates “Hysteria”

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York referred to spikes in crime rates in different parts of the country as “hysteria”.

In a conversation with New York Representative Jamaal Bowman, Ocasio-Cortez mentioned that they are seeing headlines about the increase in crime rates. She added any amount of harm is “unacceptable”;however, she also claimed to want to make sure that the “hysteria” does not drive a hysteria.

Ocasio-Cortez added that they are looking at these numbers in a context in order to make rational decisions about what to allocate in that given context.

Ocasio-Cortez: authorities should stop building prisons

It can be noted that earlier in June Ocasio-Cortez argued that authorities should stop making prisons. She suggested that instead, they should focus on underlying public health issues.

Ocasio-Cortez also added that it is unacceptable to use jails as “garbage bins.” She later stated that if we want to reduce crimes and the number of people going to jail, the answer for it is to stop building more prisons.

The Democratic representative then noted that authorities should also make sure that they build more hospitals and get people the mental health care, overall care, and employment that they need. AOC added that this is meant to support communities and not throw them away.

On top of this, Ocasio-Cortez together with Bowman, and Chuck Schumer also called on Congress to allocate $400,000 towards a program called “Stand Up To Violence”. The program aims to address gun violence by providing counseling and community outreach.

Ocasio-Cortez and fellow Democrats are using the newly introduced method called “earmarking” to request financial support within their districts.

Journalist slammed Ocasio-Cortez on how she called the crime rates “hysteria”

Meanwhile, journalist Glenn Greenwald criticized AOC on how she called the rising crime rates “hysteria”.

Greenwald stated that Ocasio-Cortez is mocking people as “hysterical” because are afraid of the rising violent crimes in their community. He also noted that Ocasio-Cortez is making these comments even after she voted last month to secure the $2 billion in funding to police that protects her.

In addition to these comments, Greenwald also shared a tweet of the New York representative where she criticized Republican Senator Ted Cruz and other Republicans; according to AOC, Cruz almost had her “murdered” during the attack on the Capitol. Greenwald added in the tweet that just like AOC, he also gets upset when people are “hysterical” about their fear of violent crimes.

The latest comments made by the Democratic New York representative come as the overall shooting incidents in New York City spiked to over 53.2% to date. On top of this, murder rates have increased to 13.3%.

These numbers are the latest available crime data from NYPD covering the week of June 20.
